Outdoor experiences

Build confidence and a sense of wonder

Outdoor learning experiences at Olivewood offer a range of benefits, enhancing academic learning, physical health, social skills, and environmental awareness.

Outdoor exursions
Each year, many of our pupils take part in outdoor excursions, including walking trips to the Scottish Highlands, where they experience the awe of the natural landscape and the joy of shared achievement. These memorable journeys are often a highlight of their time at Olivewood, fostering teamwork, reflection, and a connection that stays with them for life.

Local nature walks
We take advantage of our surrounding community for local walks, where pupils engage in seasonal exploration and link classroom learning to real-world environments. These walks are often tied to curriculum themes — from science to storytelling — and help build children’s sense of place and belonging.

Gardening sessions
Some of our pupils enjoy regular gardening sessions run in coordination with local facilities, where they take part in planting, growing, and understanding the rhythms of the natural world — nurturing not just vegetables, but also patience, responsibility, and care.

Outdoor play
Our approach to outdoor experiences isn’t limited to trips — it includes the daily rhythm of outdoor play, exploration, and downtime in fresh air. We actively encourage time outdoors as part of a healthy balance in learning and wellbeing.
